Recently, my husband purchased the Motorola Xoom which is androids’ tablet. He loves it. He told me that I could use it whenever I wanted to. I did give it a try, but it had been personalized to the way he wanted it-after all it was his. I felt that if I used it I would mess something up for him and I didn’t want to do that, so I didn’t play around with it much to get a good feel for it. He asked me if I might want one, and if I did, would I use it?
I quickly responded no; I had my laptop. At the time, I didn’t feel that I needed to have one. My husband went on to say that you could have kindle on it and nook, both two good e-readers. I let him know that if I wanted to read a book I would pick up a paper back and read it. He laughed.
Over the past few months, I had been reading various articles about e-readers and I really hadn’t been that impressed. What’s the big deal? So you can read a book on a tiny computer that fits in the palm of your hands. So what if an e-reader is lighter then most books on the market. There was something still so nostalgic to me when I would pick up a book. The touch of the paper, the smell of a new book. I know it sounds stupid, but I didn’t think that I was ready to give that up.
When my husband and I were in flight to California, I noticed something. As I looked around me, almost every single person had either the Xoom, an I-pad, a Kindle, or the Nook. Very few were actually reading a paper book. It got me thinking. Was I really not willing to change with the times? Was this the way our world was headed? In a society full of technology, and I love technology, was I stuck?
So I began to really consider the Kindle, the Nook, an I-pad, or the Xoom. The I-pad was the first to go off my list. I love apple, don’t get me wrong, I did own a Mac for a short time in my life. But, currently I was hooked on to Android. My phone is an Android and I love it. That led me to consider the Xoom. It’s Android. I looked at my husband’s Xoom. He had the 10 inch honeycomb one. To me, it felt way to heavy and big. So, I had to think what would I mainly be using it for? Reading of course. I knew that if I wanted to do facebook or play any games, I would be doing that on my laptop. However, I did like the option of being able to connect to the internet in the flash of a finger.
Not totally excluding the Xoom, I thought about the Kindle. The Kindle is nice and small, lightweight. I could see myself taking it places to read easily enough, but something about it seemed boring. If I wanted to read magazines, it would be in black and white; I just couldn’t curl up with that idea. Which left me with one more reader to look at. The Nook.
When I picked up the Nook color with the 7 inch screen, I was amazed at how light it was. Like the Kindle, it was very portable and the perfect size for me. I could read books and magazines on it, and the magazines would be in color. I liked this idea. But, I think what I like best about the Nook, and probably why I ended up choosing it, was the fact that if I wanted to get on the internet I could. There is even software available that will let you turn your Nook in to a full fledge tablet. I liked having the option of having an e-reader most of the time, but if I wanted to surf the internet I could.
In short I went with the Nook because it fit me. I love it! Now, I can be seen these days, sitting quietly outside on my deck reading on my Nook. I feel better for have moved on with society. Do I miss paperbacks? Well, it hasn’t been very long since I’ve been using the Nook, and I still have paperback books to finish, so I suppose that I don’t miss them for I am still using them as well.
I have to thank my technological advanced husband for recommending the Nook.
